Parents:

Tutoring is most likely a new experience and you may feel  a little apprehensive as to what to expect.

Here are my top 5 tips to maximise the session for you and your child, so you will be satisfied parents:

  1. Keep a notebook, where you can record areas of concern or success that your child experiences.
  2. Take the notebook to parent’s evening to note areas of strength or weakness that the teacher comments on. Ask the teacher for the level your child is working at,where he is within the class and the rate of his progress.
  3. Provide a magazine type box to hold all resources for the session including a pencil case.
  4. Engage with all homework set and encourage your child with extra practice where appropriate.
  5. Set aside 10 minutes at the end of every session for a debrief with your tutor.

Pupils:

This your special 1:1 time, a golden opportunity to ask for help, have the undivided attention of a teacher who is completely there for you and wants you to be motivated and happy.

Here are my top 5 tips for pupils:

  1. Be assured your tutor really wants to help. Feel free to ask your tutor where you would like help or further practice.
  2. Complete all your homework making a note of areas you found easy and challenging. This will speed up your tutor’s assessment of your abilities, so your session is fine tuned to your specific needs.
  3. Ask for good mathematical websites and discover your own, to further practice your skills.
  4. Do practise your tables and mathematical games to speed up and develop your ability with mental mathematics. The Daily Telegraph Mind Gym is an excellent resource to keep practising the 4 rules of number and build confidence with fractions, percentages and square roots of numbers.
  5. Ask your class teacher for extra help and/or resources too.
